Individuals with Autism and Intellectual Disability are more likely than their peers to experience difficulties socialising in and out of school. As teenagers finish their school years, these difficulties can become compounded as learning support provided in schools, is suddenly withdrawn and individuals are left relying on family and carers to support them. Many young people with learning disabilities find this time very unsettling. Our videos help to prepare students for this transition to adulthood.
Studies have proven that individuals with learning difficulties and Autism are more susceptible to feelings of isolation, with nearly 50% of them experiencing chronic loneliness in adulthood. The multiple cognitive, physical, and mental health challenges that are already felt amongst this subset, become challenged further with dealing with isolation. Butterfly Social Skills provide resources to help students with these difficulties.
Learning and practicing life and social skills while still in school can lead to more meaningful relationships after school which will then support the individual in their journey from school to adult life.
Take a look at our introduction video below for a preview of our work.
Our portfolio encompasses a range of different teaching directions to help with socialising, getting around the community, healthy living and finding and keeping work.
Communication Skills
These videos address the important social skills required for communicating, having conversations and making friends. The six videos address a range of social skills and provide scenarios demonstrating how they can be used. The videos are designed to be used as a full program and each one builds on the previous skills taught.
After School
Leaving school presents significant changes for students. We address the transition and how the loss of routine may present to students. We make suggestions of how to prepare for this life change and discuss the importance of remaining an active member of the community. This includes attending college, finding a job, interviewing and starting work.
Transport Training
Getting around is key to living independently. As students get older the necessity to develop transportation skills is imperative to being able to function in the community alone. Being able to get from home to work or college or other social activities will provide greater opportunities for more varied and independent life.
Healthy Living
Currently in development these videos will be ready in January 2024 and focus on keeping healthy. People with learning disabilities have a lower life expectancy than others and diet and exercise are a key factor in various associated morbidities. Learning how to take care of their bodies is a positive step towards living a healthier and longer life.
